Miracle Courage

Courage assists us each day in the choices we make:
whether to show up or not, whether to speak out or not, whether to face reality or not.

In the coming six weeks leading up to publication of The Miracle Collectors, Uncovering Stories of Wonder, Joy, and Mystery, you will be hearing from us more frequently as we highlight specific chapters of the book as they relate to daily life. In commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Joan focuses her thoughts on Miracle Courage.

Collecting Miracle Moments One Story at a Time.

What a week: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, an Inauguration, the hope of a better tomorrow – those were my thoughts as I woke this morning – how do we get through it? Worried about potential violence, recognizing injustice, and yet standing up for what we believe in.

We call it courage - the courage to face each day fully. In writing The Miracle Collectors we saw miracle courage in action as people shared their stories: stopping to rescue someone in a medical crisis, rushing to the scene of a crime, insisting on salvaging a wreckage. The Miracle Collectors recounts a number of stories with human lives at stake and at personal risk, faced head-on in spite of personal danger. MLK spoke of courage as “an inner resolution to go forward despite obstacles.” We all recognize the obstacles of the past year and yet we must move forward, complacency is not an option - at least not in my life. Serious injury, fire, illness of those I love are part of life, not the end of it. The acknowledgement and courage of so many others to step up and offer assistance is what makes my life livable, joyous, in fact.

As I look to this week with anticipation and anxiety, I am reassured by other words of MLK, “People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.” It is my goal to pay attention to communicating better with understanding and empathy to promote courage - the miracle courage we all need to survive in both body and soul.
